The Cold Hurts The Old
With heavy snowfalls forecast and a cold snap expected to last at least through the weekend, ALONE is stressing the importance of members of the public checking on their older neighbours, family and friends who live alone. A report published yesterday by the Institute of Public Health has shown that many older people are struggling to remain warm as a result of the current economic climate.
VAT Is A Tax On The Poor
Michel Noonan said today that people should not be “scaremongering the elderly”. With a VAT rise on top of more than 10% rise in fuel costs with a 25% cut in energy allowances and 6 weeks off the fuel allowance period, the government have done quite enough scaremongering already.
Budget Fuel Allowance Cuts
In July, the Government announced a 19% drop in allowances for gas and electricity for older people, and a removal of the allowance for smokeless fuel. Today they cut the fuel allowance by 6 weeks.
Christmas Campaign Launch 2011
The “Some Of Us Need a Hand” campaign was launched with over 25 older people who use ALONE’s services, and volunteers working with the charity.

The report highlights the challenges faced by older people as a result of levels of reduction in State services and general cutbacks, but stresses that ALONE will always strive to ensure that it meets the needs of those who use our services.
Suggested cuts will have high cost
As a society we need to ensure that the provision of home care packages and home help hours receive the full support and backing of Government and the HSE. Such cuts will prove short-sighted, hugely damaging, and will place an unfeasible weight on the nursing home system.
