Our work in numbers
By the end of July 2026, ALONE has supported thousands of older people across Ireland through Support Coordination, Assistive Technology, Support & Befriending, Housing with Support and more.
Communications & Campaigns
"It's a godsend ... and even to get that phone call and have the chat. It makes all the difference"
During the recent heat wave RTÉ called out to visit Katheleen Daly a 102-year-old who receives support from ALONE. Kathleen was also joined by her Visitation Support & Befriending volunteer Ita who has been calling out to visit Kathleen for the last 18 months.
“All I have is the old age pension. I’m just barely surviving.”
In June, we launched our Pre-Budget 2027 Submission, Fixing the Foundations, in Leinster House, setting out practical proposals to tackle poverty, loneliness and inadequate support for Ireland's ageing population.
As part of the campaign, older people supported by ALONE shared their experiences, including Martin, who has lived in a bedsit for 19 years and struggles to get by on the State Pension. His story reflects the reality facing many older people across Ireland and highlights why change is urgently needed.

Front Line Stories
Do you know an older person who loves sharing memories and stories, and who might be interested in hearing more about taking part in our Christmas campaign?
Opens SharePoint in a new tab
Thank you to everyone who has already shared potential stories through the Front Line Stories Log. Your support helps us ensure older people's voices are heard and represented in our campaigns.
We're now in the middle of planning this year's Christmas campaign and are looking for older people who would enjoy sharing their memories, experiences and reflections on Christmas.
If there's someone you've been supporting who you think would enjoy taking part, please add their details to the Front Line Stories Log. The Communications team would be delighted to give them a call, explain what's involved, and see if they'd like to be part of this year's campaign.
County Spotlight
This month we are highlighting the incredible work taking place across County Carlow. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers and staff, hundreds of older people continue to receive practical support, companionship and connection every week.
Local collaboration, community engagement and volunteer commitment continue to strengthen services across the county.
The most common Support Coordination interventions provided in Carlow so far this year have focused on addressing Social Isolation/Prescribing and Physical Health needs. This included providing Support & Befriending, access to local community groups, and technology to support older people's health, such as pendant alarms and Pan Pan watches.
Community in Carlow
Older person story
Donal lives alone with his Jack Russell dog and has been managing on his own for many years.
Donal lives alone with his Jack Russell dog and has been managing on his own for many years. While independent, he often spent long periods without seeing or speaking to anyone. In fact, during the pandemic, he went several years without a visitor calling to his home.
When Donal was referred to ALONE, one of the supports discussed was the Support & Befriending. Soon afterwards, he was matched with volunteer Catherine.
The two quickly formed a friendship. Catherine calls to see Donal regularly, and the pair enjoy chatting about shared interests and life in the local community. Donal particularly appreciates the informal nature of the visits.
“She's lovely, very easy-going, and we get on very well,” says Donal. “When she's free, she gives me a call and drops by for a chat. It works well for us both.”
While Donal values his independence, having someone call in regularly has made a real difference. Catherine is now one of the few people who visits his home, providing companionship and a friendly face each week.
For Donal, the support is simple but meaningful. As he puts it:
“It's great to have that connection.”
Support Coordinator in North Carlow
Sharon joined ALONE two and a half years ago, bringing more than 20 years' experience supporting older people.
“I've worked with older people for more than 20 years. While I enjoyed management roles, I missed the direct connection with people. When the opportunity to join ALONE came up, I knew it was the right fit for me.”
“Many people know ALONE for Support & Befriending, but they're often surprised by the wide range of supports we provide. Every day I see the difference those supports can make in helping people stay connected and independent.”
“I recently matched a volunteer with an older man who had become very isolated and hadn't had a visitor in over a year. Their connection was immediate. Seeing the difference that companionship made to his life reminded me just how important these relationships are.”
“Working at ALONE has reminded me how important teamwork is. After many years in management roles, I've really enjoyed being part of a team focused on supporting older people and helping them access the support they need.”
