ALONE Encourages Communities to Keep Older People in Mind This Halloween
Some older people living alone feel unsafe in their own homes at Halloween, warns ALONE
Dublin October 29th 2026: ALONE, the organisation that supports older people to age well at home, is encouraging people to keep older neighbours, friends and relatives in mind as communities across Ireland prepare to celebrate Halloween.
While Halloween is an enjoyable occasion for many families, some older people, particularly those living alone, may feel less comfortable with increased activity, unexpected callers or noise after dark. ALONE is encouraging communities to be mindful of this while continuing to enjoy the festivities.
Seán Moynihan, CEO of ALONE, said: “Halloween is a wonderful opportunity for communities to come together, and we’re simply encouraging people to be mindful of older neighbours, particularly those who may be living alone.”
“Many older people enjoy seeing local children taking part in Halloween celebrations and welcoming trick-or-treaters to their doors. At the same time, some people may choose not to participate, and we would encourage families to respect signs that a household may not be taking part in the celebrations.”
Moynihan continued: Every year we hear from older people who feel frightened at Halloween, whether its fireworks set off near their homes or groups gathering outside. Most young people enjoy Halloween safely, but we’d ask parents to remind them that there are some activities that might leave an older person living alone feeling unsafe in their own home.”
With demand for its services continuing to grow, ALONE has already supported more than 43,000 older people so far this year. The organisation works with older people across Ireland on issues ranging from loneliness and housing to finances, health and staying independent at home, and is reminding older people and their families that help is always available.
Concluding, Moynihan said:
“We also want older people to know that ALONE is here to help, whatever the issue, big or small. You shouldn’t feel like you need to be in crisis before reaching out for support.”
“Whether you’re looking for information, support, or simply want to have a chat about what help might be available, our team is here to listen. The earlier someone gets in touch, the easier it can be to address challenges before they become a crisis.”
“Our National Support & Referral Line is open 365 days a year from 8am to 8pm. If you’re concerned about your own situation, or about an older person you know, we’d encourage you to pick up the phone and have a conversation with us.”
