“ALONE seeks planning permission to deliver Housing with Support for older people in Dublin area”
Dublin 9th September, 2022, ALONE, the organisation that supports older people to age at home, is leading a redevelopment and refurbishment project of Jamestown Court, Inchicore to create age-friendly one-bedroom homes for older people on the housing waiting list. This project encompasses the refurbishment of one of the existing blocks (work already complete) and the construction of two new blocks to replace existing blocks on site.
Previously the site was owned by Dublin City Council and operated as traditional senior citizens’ accommodation, with 50 bedsits circa 28 sq metres each. DCC transferred ownership of the site to ALONE in early 2019 to develop and refurbish the site into suitable accommodation for older people. At the time of the transfer there were 16 DCC tenants living onsite who have since become ALONE tenants.
ALONE’s plan was to develop the site in several phases, the first of which is now complete. The former 28 sq m sub-standard bedsits are being redeveloped and doubled in size to modern, comfortable 57 sq m one bedroom apartments.
In Phase 1, ALONE developed 12 one bed apartments with their own front door and private balcony. Construction commenced in June 2019 and was completed at the end of October 2020.
ALONE submitted an application for planning permission for the next phase of the project which they expect to be complete in mid-2024. This phase involves the construction of 43 new units.
ALONE CEO Sean Moynihan said ‘We are delighted to be pushing ahead with plans to deliver the right types of homes in the right area for older people in Dublin. The story of this regeneration is what is needed across the country in every town and city. Our housing team have worked long and hard with the residents and neighbours to get us we here we are today and we hope that delivery of Jamestown Court will be timely to help people who desperately need homes.’
ALONE and their design team have worked together and are ensuring all homes are compliant with Universal Design, providing the best long-term homes for their tenants. This includes a variety of services and supports in place for older tenants.
