Camino Portuguese

Join us, from the 24th of September to the 1st of October, as we walk the final stretch of the Camino Portuguese in Northern Spain and raise much needed funds to help us support older people who are lonely, isolated, frail, ill, homeless, living in poverty, or are facing other difficulties. Full Itinerary here.

Walk the last 102 km of the Portuguese Camino from Porrino to Santiago de Compostela (the minimum required to earn your Compostela). The central Camino Portuguese route is relatively flat and easy to navigate, and it is a great alternative to the Camino Frances. Spend one unforgettable week walking through stunning Galician countryside and villages and exploring fascinating historical towns and cities.

Itinerary

Transfer from Santiago airport to Tui. Transfer is from the Aer Lingus flight from Dublin only.

Tui – Private transport to Porrnino – Redondela (16 Km)

We will have a private transfer from Tui to our starting point in Porrnino. We will pass through different villages where we can visit Romanesque style chapels, such as the chapel of Santa Maria, Santa Eulalia de Mos or Santiaguiño de Antas.  Before arriving in Redondela we will have a nice view of the coast and the Puente de Rande bridge that was built to cross the estuary of Vigo.  This area is well-known for its tasty oysters and seafood.

From Redondela to Pontevedra (20 Km)

On day three we will enjoy beautiful sea views, and cross the Ponte Sampaio bridge, where many battles took place during the French occupation. We will pass the church of Santa Maria, a fine example of Romanesque architecture, before reaching the beautiful city of Pontevedra,  which is best known for its urban planning and the charm of its old town, it is also home to the churches of La Peregrina, where there is a statue of the Virgin Mary dressed as a pilgrim.

Pontevedra – Caldas de Reis (23 Km)

Once we leave Pontevedra, the route will begin to change we will mainly walk through eucalyptus and pine forests, where we will see many “cruceros”, a very typical Galician monument, related to the “Santa Compaña” – a mythical belief in rural Galicia, that denotes the presence of the dead in the world of the living. We will pass through the villages Santa María de Alba and Agudelo, before reaching Caldas de Reis, which is known for its thermal springs.

Padrón – Santiago (24 Km)

This is the last day of walking before reaching our destination, along the way we will pass through by Iria Flavia, which was once a Roman city and later an episcopal see until the 11th century, it is also the birthplace of Nobel laureate Camilo José Cela. We will reach O Milladorio the humilladoiro where we get our first glimpse of the cathedral, traditionally this is where pilgrims upon catching sight of the cathedral for the first time ‘humbled themselves’ by kneeling,  here the walk becomes more urban as we walk into Santiago.
