Loneliness Taskforce 2024 Political Briefing
The Loneliness Taskforce, formed in 2018, advocates for a national strategy to address loneliness in Ireland. Despite government commitments, no comprehensive plan exists, leaving Ireland with the highest loneliness rates in the EU—20% of people report feeling lonely most or all of the time. Loneliness poses serious health risks, comparable to smoking or obesity, and is linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and early mortality. The COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing social challenges, such as housing shortages and mental health service gaps, have worsened isolation.
In 2024, the Taskforce launched the Loneliness Taskforce Research Network to strengthen evidence-based policy. Globally, the WHO has declared loneliness a public health priority, and the Irish Seanad has urged government action. The Taskforce proposes the AASK framework:
- Action: Develop a cross-sectoral national strategy.
- Awareness: Launch public campaigns to reduce stigma.
- Supports: Fund community initiatives and primary care interventions.
- Knowledge: Invest in research to guide policy.
Immediate investment and leadership are essential to reduce loneliness and foster social connection nationwide.
